*An Essay on Our 9-Day 'Cherry Blossom Japan Tour' with Thomas Cook*
(From 30.03.2026 to 08.04.202 6)
(The experience of this tour was so marvellous that we were unable to describe it in a few words; hence, this long essay.)_
*1. Itinerary*
One of the most important aspects of the tour is its itinerary. Apart from the famous, pagoda-style, divine temples and shrines of Japan, we saw mountains and valleys, the hustling and bustling life of big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kobe, and the calm and serene life of humble and helpful people in small villages of Japan. We saw the thrilling and once-in-a-lifetime performances of tall and huge sumo wrestlers, and a wrestling match between a sumo wrestler and one of our very active and friendly fellow travelers, Rajubhai from Jamnagar, in which, to everyone's surprise and cheers, Rajubhai defeated the heavyweight – more than 150 kg – sumo wrestler, Joe. We had an opportunity to visit the Toyota car museum where we saw hundreds of vintage and latest cars, and we also experienced a traditional Japanese tea ceremony where we learned to prepare our own matcha tea under the able guidance of cute Japanese ladies who patiently taught us. We all were mesmerised when we went through TeamLab, where we had a very unique, experience of walking through water, with mirrors and different types of lights all around us. We scaled a height of 350 metres in the sky by going to the top of the Tokyo Skytree for a bird's-eye view of Tokyo, and drove through the long, dark underground tunnels under the huge mountains of Japan.
*2. Food*
When one visits a country like Japan, getting good Indian vegetarian food is a big concern, particularly for people who eat only vegetarian food. We all were pleasantly surprised when we got proper, delicious Indian food for every lunch and dinner, and a 5-star continental buffet for our daily breakfast. The long list of Indian vegetarian food we enjoyed includes: 'Aamras with Undhiyu and Puri', 'Puranpoli' 'Mohanthal', 'Ragda Pattice', 'Papdi Chaat', 'Bhelpuri', 'Dahi Vada', 'Idli, Dosa, Medu Vada', 'Samosa', 'Roti, Naan', a variety of vegetables, 'Rice', 'Curd Rice', 'Pulao', and 'Biryani'. At the end of each meal, we also relished desserts – Rasgulla, Ice Creams, Jalebi with Rabdi – and a big glass of buttermilk and a cup of warm, refreshing tea.
*3. Accommodation*
During the tour, we stayed in four different five-star hotels with good, big rooms and well-equipped toilets. In two hotels, to our disbelief, we were provided with nightwear, and in another hotel, we could enjoy the hot, warm atmosphere of a sauna and a dip in small hot and cold sulphur water pools (Onsen). (Some of us avoided the water pools as it was mandatory to enter these pools in our birthday suit.)
*4. Travel*
Apart from very comfortable bus rides, we travelled by ropeway, cruise, pirate ship, and the bullet train. The travelling was so comfortable in air-conditioned buses that we could easily fall asleep for a restorative power nap (beauty sleep). Thanks to our soft, humble, and ever-smiling lady bus driver, Ms. Kaede-san. At every sight we had free access to clean and well equipped washrooms.
*5. Time*
At some places, we were given 'me time' during which we could explore the sights on our own. More than the 'me time', what we all were very, very happy with was adequate time for selfies and photography, and plenty of time on three occasions for shopping. Most of us returned with an average of 5 kg of extra luggage.
*6. Tour Manager and Guide*
Nothing would have worked out so well without Mr. Omkar Mantri, our tour manager, and our 'Mr. Know-All' guide, Mr. Shyam Sharma, who was not only fluent in Hindi and English but also equally fluent in Japanese. What touched us was not only the very friendly and caring nature of Mr. Omkar but also the way he handled a medical emergency seconds before we boarded the bullet train.
A heartfelt, big thank you to Mrs Manika and Tushar Shah from Thomas Cook (GCP, Tardeo Branch).
